This course focusses on advanced performance, working towards a 30-minute public recital in May.
Lectures focus on a research-led approach to musical performance, including ideas around performance practice & interpretation, style & genre, writing programme notes, practice regimes, managing performance anxiety, presentation and stagecraft. Students will attend performance workshops, receiving feedback from their peers and teaching staff, and honing their abilities to critique and evaluate performances. Students will be encouraged to continue to take part in university ensembles and to attend performances as part of the university concert series.
Students will attend three tutorial sessions, discussing issues related to their own performing, selecting programmes and writing programme notes, and reflecting on their career goals in music performance.
Students will also receive one-to-one lessons on one instrument / voice (20 x 1 hour lessons). Instrumental and vocal tutors will develop an individually tailored programme of study, focussing on core technical and musical skills and on gaining confidence as performers, expanding creative outlook, and individual performance interests. Tutors will advise students on selecting appropriate repertoire, but students should take the creative lead in their programmes and in curating their recitals. Instrumental / vocal tutors will submit a short progress report in December, though this will not form part of the overall course grade.
Students must have achieved a CGS award of B3 or higher in year 3 in order to be able to progress to this course in year 4.
Information on contact teaching time is available from the course guide.
