This course focusses on student-led ensemble and solo performance. Students will receive 10 hours of tuition with a specialist instrumental / vocal tutor, and attend lectures on performance practice, style & genre, successful ensemble performance, practising, rehearsal etiquette, and stagecraft.
Students will be given the chance to present individual concepts for an ensemble performance project. Each successful bid will be allocated a group of 5-8 performers, who will develop each concept into a 10-minute public performance, as part of a mini-festival at the university in December.
Students must have achieved a CGS award of C3 or higher in performance at Level 1, 2HS in order to be able to progress to this course in year 2.

This course focusses on student-led ensemble and solo performance. Lectures focus on a research-led approach to musical performance, including ideas around performance practice, style & genre, and practical considerations around musicianship and successful ensemble performance, practising, rehearsal etiquette, and stagecraft. Selected lectures will include sign-up slots, where students can give short performances of solo or ensemble pieces, giving the opportunity for immediate feedback from their peers and teaching staff. Students will also be encouraged to attend regular performance workshops and masterclasses.
Students will be given the chance to present individual concepts for an ensemble performance project. A selection of these will be chosen by the course coordinator, with a group of 5-8 performers allocated to each concept. In supervised practice sessions and individual rehearsals, each group will develop each concept into a 10-minute programme, selecting and / or arranging repertoire, managing a rehearsal schedule, and undertaking marketing. Groups will then present a 10-minute public performance, as part of a mini-festival in December.
Students will also receive one-to-one lessons on their specialist instrument / voice (10 x 1-hour lessons per term), or they can double on two instruments with either a 70/30% or 50/50% split.
Instrumental and vocal tutors will develop an individually tailored programme of study, focussing on core technical and musical skills and on gaining confidence as performers, expanding creative outlook, and individual performance interests. Tutors will help students to select appropriate repertoire, working towards a solo recital in second semester. Instrumental / vocal tutors will submit a short progress report at the end of term, though this will not form part of the course assessment.
Students will be expected to attend at least 4 performances as part of the university concert series, to join and attend rehearsals with at least one university (or external) instrumental ensemble or choir, and to participate in occasional workshops / masterclasses by visiting performers and composers.

Participation in performance workshops, including masterclasses with visiting performers / composers as appropriate. Attendance at university concerts will be taken via a register. Students will also submit a short form outlining their attendance, ensemble activity, and any other relevant performance activities, including a short description of each (max 300 words).

Students will present a 10-minute group performance as part of a mini-festival. Each group will present a selection of scores and marketing material to examiners. Each individual will include a short write up (c. 300 words) outlining their roles and involvement in the project. Grades will be assessed by a combination of the overall group performance and individual contribution. |
