This course offers students an introduction to Chinese history and contemporary China, with a particular emphasis on the role of translation and translators. It aims to enhance students' understanding of translation as a complex social activity that extends beyond simple information transfer. The course explores the intricate connections between translation and various aspects of society, including politics, economics, and culture, underscoring its substantial impact on society at large.

This course is structured chronologically, taking students on a journey through time from the Zhou dynasty (1045BC–256BC) to the present day. It explores China's rich translation traditions, examining pivotal historical shifts and its current involvement in global translation endeavours. An important aspect of the course is the exploration of the concept of the translator, analysing historical discourses and institutional practices that have shaped this construct. Prior knowledge of the Chinese language is not a requirement for enrolling in this course.
