Language is central to our humanity. Language and society are inextricably linked. Language unites; language divides. This course will develop your understanding of the social nature of language, providing insight into, among other things, the relationship between gender and language, language death and the issue of language policy and planning.

Based on attendance, the quality of interaction with peers during tutorials, and contributions to weekly reading tasks (which have to be prepared prior to the tutorial). Summative feedback will be given through comments provided by the tutor with the graded essay and through reports associated with both the group project and, more generally, the Tutorial Assessment Mark. The feedback involved in all these assessments will also contain a formative element. Formative feedback will also be provided through in-class discussion and individual consultation with tutors, both in the classroom context and during tutors' weekly office hours. |

This assessment takes the form a group task demonstrating engagement with three pieces of existing sociolinguistic research on a theme covered in the course. This can be presented either in the form of a a podcast, or Youtube-style video (approx 8-10 mins in length which is around 1200-1600 words at average speaking speed). Summative feedback will be given through comments provided by the tutor with the graded essay and through reports associated with both the group project and, more generally, the Tutorial Assessment Mark.
