This course provides an opportunity to develop further an aspect or aspects of findings identified in the Geoscience Project A, or to produce a piece of independent and original research on an approved topic. Advanced level knowledge of a sub-area of the geosciences will be developed through independent study supervised by a member of academic staff.

This course requires you to design, execute and report a substantial piece of individual research on a topic of your choice: the final document should be between 8000 and 10,000 words in length. It will give you the opportunity to demonstrate advanced research and communication skills in a specialist subject area of your choice. Your work should set out a coherent, original argument drawing on research literature and established methodologies that: a) identifies and justifies your specific choice of research question, b) defends your research findings and c) discusses how these relate to the wider field of investigation. You should demonstrate an awareness of the specific approaches that inspire your work and be able to justify your choice over alternative intellectual and practical approaches to the research field.
Information on contact teaching time is available from the course guide.
