Course Description

France prides itself on being the birthplace of photography in the early nineteenth century. Over the two centuries since then, photography has become established as a central part of French culture, and an important medium through which France portrays and understands itself. France has also produced some of the most influential critical thinking about photography. The course will consider some of the key trends and practitioners of French photography since the nineteenth century, as well as the broader place of photography in French culture, and the role played by photography in shaping a sense of France and Frenchness. It will also explore critical responses to photography, in particular through the work of cultural theorist Roland Barthes, who emerged as one of the most perceptive thinkers about photography in post-war France.
