Course Description

The background to the finite element method and its use in the engineering structures is explained in this course.  Application of this background to linear static and dynamic problems is an important aspect of the course. Coursework assignments will be based on the student edition of Abaqus finite element software.

The content of the course is formed of three sections:

  • Basic equations for linear analysis (kinematics, equilibrium and constitutive) of solids, shells and beams
  • Basis of the solution method for linear problems (minimum potential energy, virtual work, weighted residuals)
  • FEM procedure for linear analysis of solids, shells and beams (shape functions, element stiffness matrices, element load vector, system equations, solution methods)
