This course aims to provide students with opportunities to explore research informed approaches to teaching and learning in and through languages. This will provide opportunities to explore mother tongue language acquisition, second language learning and bi or pluri-lingualism. The course will also explore other forms of literacy.

Students will consider the implications of diversity in terms of language a literacy to children’s learning across the curriculum. Students will also consider diversity in terms of the challenges for all children including EAL/migrant children in terms of building social capital in a Primary school setting through language and literacy learning.
Students will have opportunities to study a range of related issues such as current initiatives in the Scottish Primary system to support learning of languages and development of skills in multiple literacies; language acquisition and the impact of digital technology on language and literacy development; long term impact of learning more than one language from birth as well as ‘losing’ mother tongue through displacement.
