Course Overview

This course aims to develop students’ appreciation of the qualities, dispositions and skills required of an inclusive teacher as well as an understanding of the roles and responsibilities, and an awareness of the socio-cultural contexts in which they are learning and will be teaching.  Students will also develop an awareness of themselves as learners and beginner teachers.

Course Description

Students will:

  • Reflect on their own expectations of a beginning teacher. Examine the expectations of GTCS (SPR).
  • Consider different views of the qualities and skills a teacher needs and the responsibilities of a teacher in a Scottish primary classroom.
  • Develop an understanding of the dispositions necessary to meet the challenges of teaching in a Primary classroom.
  • Develop understanding of current developments in Scottish Primary education within a historical context including understanding of how education and politics are linked.
  • Develop their own study skills and begin to develop critical skills by exploring the personal, familiar and local moving towards the unknown, unfamiliar and global.
  • Students will be introduced to enquiry tools through use of case studies, role play, engagement in critical reading and discussion.

A 10-15 minute seminar/presentation each student presents to a group of peers on an identified topic with reference to professional literature (student-led workshops during tutorial time).
