  • ability to describe using examples the structure of membrane receptors; 
  • understand the various ways in which receptor proteins transmit information from the extra-cellular environment to their intracellular site of action;
  • describe how cross-talk between different signalling pathways can be achieved; 
  • understand how signalling pathways are structured and compartmentalised within the cell; 
  • understand the scientific methods used to study receptors and signalling pathways; 
  • the role of cell signalling in health and disease

Course Description

Course Aims: The aim of this course is to provide an in-depth understanding of selected aspects in Biochemistry. Main Learning Outcomes: Students will gain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of key signalling molecules important for human development and health. Students will get a better understanding of the scientific process by critically engaging with primary research literature. Subject-specific knowledge will be enhanced by independent research and a tutorial. Content: The course will cover recent developments in cell signalling important for human development and health. This is complemented by tutorials that introduce other topical aspects in biochemistry.
