Course Description

During the eighteenth century, the production of paintings, prints and sculptures flourished in England against a backdrop of cultural and social innovation and change: the emergence of public art exhibitions, the establishment of formal artists’ academies, the possibilities of leisure travel and tourism, and the intellectual reforms of the Enlightenment Age. Within this course, we consider where and how such art was encountered, in public exhibitions, private homes, pleasure gardens and shop windows. Artists studied include William Hogarth, Thomas Gainsborough, James Gillray and Anglica Kauffman, with primary sources examined within the University’s Special Collections as well as in the classroom.
