Course Description

Since the turn of the millenium Western art music has developed in multiple new directions which are resistant to easy summary. This course will unpick some of the most prominent strands in this recent history identifying a number of key figures operating within new music. It will explore the music of a range of composers, improvisors and performers working in a number of styles and genres. It will include music written within and for traditional Western genres and instruments; hybrid musics exploring cultural mixes; mixed musics combining acoustic instruments and electronics; as well as fusions combining elements of jazz and popular musics.

Particular emphasis will be placed on the work of women working in new music such as the composers Kaija Saariaho, Chaya Czernowin, Unsuk Chin, Liza Lim, Rebecca Saunders and Anna Thorvaldsdottir, and the performances of singer Barbara Hannigan, for whom many new works have been created.

The course will also draw attention to the importance of new music festivals in providing performance opportunities, in shaping taste, and in building the reputations of composers and performers. The course will make particular reference to music featured in the SOUND festival in Aberdeen.
