EG45G2: ADVANCED STRUCTURAL DESIGN (2022-2023)

Last modified: 29 May 2024 07:16

Course Overview

The course is a variant of the existing EA40JG course, to be made available onlyto students on the Graduate Apprenticeship in BEng in Civil Engineering, and forms part of the Level 4 Honours Programme.  The variation covers the same Learning Outcomes, content and assessment as the existing EA40JG course, but is being taught in a different half session from the original course.  Furthermore, the delivery model of this variant is a blended model, with a heavy reliance on online learning, whatever the state of Covid Lockdown.

The course divides into four main topics. The first topic will introduce the design of portal frame Industrial Buildings. The second topic will cover the design of multi-storey Commercial Buildings using structural steelwork. The third topic introduces the main features associated with the design of masonry and timber structures.  The final topic introduces the principles behind pre-stressed concrete.

Feedback

Whichever of the two assessments whose failure has contributed to the overall failure of the course will have to be resat.  The weighting of the resat elements will be as they had been previously – therefore for this Exam the weighting will be 80%.

The marks for the resat elements will be incorporated with the marks for the previously passed assessment to produce an overall resit mark.

Feedback

Whichever of the two assessments whose failure has contributed to the overall failure of the course will have to be resat.  The weighting of the resat elements will be as previous – 80% for the Open Book Exam, 20% for the Lab Report.  The marks for the resat elements will be incorporated with the marks for the previously passed assessment to produce an overall resit mark.

The weighting for this Lab Report is therefore 20%.

The submitted Lab Report will be returned to the student fully marked up by the tutor.
