Course Overview

This course aims to develop students understanding of the role of an inclusive teacher.   It will enable students to learn about children, the communities in which they live and the school and classroom as part of that community. It will provide opportunities to explore learning in a variety of spaces inside and outside the classroom setting.  Students will gain experience of working with children in a 2nd level placement over 5 weeks.  During this time students will have opportunities to explore teaching and learning in the core curricular areas of literacy, numeracy and HWB.

Course Description

  • Students will learn from experience within a Primary classroom through observation, team teaching and group teaching and opportunities to engage in the life of a school as a student teacher. Students will complete tutor directed activities in school. 
  • Learning in placement and on campus students will use a case study approach to explore approaches/models (child or teacher centred) and ways and reasons to develop evidence-based teaching strategies.
  • Students will gain insights into what makes for effective and purposeful teaching and learning.
  • Students will have opportunities to develop critical skills by exploring the complexity of teaching and learning; by exploring the contribution of key thinkers/theorists and methodology.
  • Students will gain knowledge of organization of physical environment and understanding how different approaches to teaching and learning relate to methods of classroom/pupil organisation.
  • Students will specifically explore some ‘ways of teaching’, to gain an insight of best ways to plan for and support group work.
