PO1504: UNDERSTANDING PROPERTY (2021-2022)

Course Overview

This course introduces students to the world of the built environment, professional surveying practice and the construction industry. The first section of the course discusses the different types and characteristics of property in the UK and the different legal interests that can exist in property, why people invest in property and why and how property is developed; the second section focuses on the design and construction of buildings, the identification of defects as well their impact on the environment and relevant sustainability issues.

Course Description

Environmental and climatic influences in building design and material choice;sustainable built environment; building degradation and pathology; building defects; structural and condition surveys; building measurement and survey drawings; planning, legal and financial framework.

Summative Assessments

Alternative Assessment

Assignment 1: Students will be provided with 2 articles on 2 different subject areas covered in the course and will be asked to provide answers to a series of short questions. Max 750 words for each article (50%);

Assignment 2: Open book assessment set over 48 hours in week 12 or 13 of term circa 400 wods per question (50%).

Alternative Resit Assessment

Assessment comprising 2 short essay questions (750 words each) and will be available for a specified week in resit period (100%).
