Tango music has undergone huge changes, particularly over the past 50 years or so with composer/performers such as Astor Piazzolla bringing the music of the tango out of milonga halls and into concert halls. The course will cover social, historical and analytical aspects of the music and students will create and perform their own tango music, following an immersion in all aspects of the music.

Students will learn about the origins of tango and its early development by settlers in Buenos Aires, including input from Hispanic Studies on social and historical aspects. They will gain an appreciation of the early pioneers of the genre (Troilo, Pugliese), through the Golden Age of Tango in the 1940s, to Tango Nuevo with Piazzolla, Neotango (Bajafondo, Gotan Project) and tango-influenced rock, pop and jazz music. Assessment will be through regular in-class and take-away compositional exercises, a composition assignment devised by the student in conjunciton with the course tutor and a performance event devised by the group for which each student will receive an individual mark for their contribution to the performance (30%) as well as a generic mark for the whole group for the devising of the event (15%).
