Course Overview

explores Immunology in the context of human disease, discussing the mechanisms the human immune system uses to protect against pathogens and also how its dysfunction may lead to problems such as autoimmune disease, allergy and cancer. Therapeutic approaches are considered;
prepares you for further study in Immunology and other aspects of medical science;
practical classes will give you the opportunity to investigate some of the topics considered in the lectures as well as reinforcing general laboratory skills;
you will gain wider transferrable skills of value to employers including report writing, presentation of a topic and team working

Course Description

The course investigates how the various mechanisms of innate and adaptive immunity interact to protect against human disease and how immune dysfunction may cause disease including autoimmunity and hypersensitivity. Immune responses to pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites) will be covered as will the involvement of the immune system in areas such as cancer biology and transplantation. Immunotherapy including vaccines and use of antibodies will be discussed. Practical classes reinforce this knowledge as well as teaching immunological and generic laboratory techniques and a range of transferable skills.
