GL4532: INTEGRATIVE GEOLOGY THROUGH FIELDWORK (2021-2022)

Last modified: 31 May 2022 13:05

Course Overview

Field observations and their interpretations together with other datasets and imagery, allied to focussed laboratory work on geological materials, may be integrated to inform understanding of geological processes that play within and upon the earth’s crust. The course will enhance essential geo- and reasoning skills through integrated field, laboratory and desk-top investigations showing how geological processes interact in time and place – a culmination of the BSc Geology programme.

Course Description

This course integrates direct observation and interpretation of geology from directed fieldwork together with published datasets to build a broad, multidisciplinary understanding of the evolution of part of the continental crust through a period of geological time. The fieldwork component will consist of a linked series of data-gathering and interpretation tasks. This will be supplemented by additional resources such as geophysical subsurface/satellite imagery and geochemical data.

When appropriate logistical arrangements can be made, the course will involve studying a “geotraverse” style transect, involving residential fieldwork of approximately one week’s duration. This will link to associated “desk-top” exercises for context and to supplement fieldwork leading to an integrated understanding of linked geological processes.
