This Non-Honours Level 3 French language course is open to students who have passed either FR2502 or FR2512 and are following a Designated Degree in French Studies, LLB (French or Belgian law), European Studies (with ONE language), any Degree with French language as a minor subject, or any other Degree with the addition of French to its prescribed courses. Its fundamental aim to develop in students a high level of both receptive (reading and listening) and productive (writing and speaking) skills in French.
Teaching falls into three broad areas that complement each other and contribute to the students’ overall command of the French language. There are three weekly class. One class taken by a native French speaker focuses on oral communicative skills. Hour A develops competence in the written language at a formal level as well as in the practical applications of language, developing both written and spoken competence in a variety of registers. The Grammar Hour aims at furthering the students' practical understanding of grammar.
Exercises are designed to improve students' comprehension of both the spoken and written language, as well as increase their sensitivity to linguistic variety. Traditional kinds of written exercise introduced and practiced at levels 1 and 2 (translation from and into French, report writing in French) will be continued in order to build upon and extend the skills already developed by presenting more challenging translation passages with greater variety of lexis, syntactical patterns, style and register and by increasing the demands posed by the report and composition in terms of length, content, sophistication of argument and expression.
