This course will examine modern and contemporary Paris as a site of transnational cultural production by exploring literature, film, music and the visual arts. Students will study the city in terms of a hub for postcolonial and diasporic artists yet they will also look at how Paris is and has been part of a much broader transnational network of cities and locales. After an introduction to postcolonial theory, transnational urban studies and a brief cultural history of modern and contemporary Paris, the course will move on to consider how transnational Paris is represented in literature, film and music. In addition, this course will introduce students to the ways in which cultural institutions such as the Musée de l’histoire de l’immigration and the Musée du Quai Branly form a broader context to understanding the transnational nature of Parisian cultural life.
Notes Available only to students in Programme Year 3 with a reading knowledge of French. This course may NOT be included as part of a graduating curriculum with Paris Transnational City of Culture B. It will be available in 2017/18 and in alternate sessions thereafter.
