This course offers students with intermediate or good knowledge French language an advanced introduction to twentieth and twenty-first century French and Francophone culture and society, focusing on the occupation of France during World War II and the experience of colonialism and post-colonialism.

Course Description

This course is intended for students wishing to proceed with French studies beyond Level 1 but is open to all students with a reading knowledge of French. Twentieth century French culture and society will be  explored through the study of a selection of films, short prose texts, poetry and socio-political documents, organised around the broad themes of ‘Resistance and Collaboration in World War II’ and ‘Colonialism and its Aftermath’. You will learn in more detail about the themes and styles of modern French literature and culture and will gain more advanced understanding of how to relate texts to their socio-historical context. Teaching will take place in lectures and tutorials where you will be able to develop your analytical skills and exchange your ideas in a small group.
