The aim of this course is to facilitate a rediscovery of the generative influence of the sacred texts of Judaism and Christianity in the arts. The stories, characters, visions, prophecies, imagery, and sayings of these texts have stimulated the imagination for millennia. Indeed, the appropriation and reconfiguration of biblical and para-biblical material in art forms such as literature, music, visual art, and film is so pervasive that such influence has become commonplace to the point of being undiscernible. But this course will open new vistas on the Bible in the arts.

This course investigates the cultural influence of various ancient sacred texts of Judaism and Christianity. These texts include the writings found in the Tanakh (or Old Testament), the New Testament, and other related literature not found in Jewish and Christian canons (“para-biblical” texts). Specifically, this course explores the ways in which biblical and para-biblical narratives, characters, visions, prophecies, imagery, and sayings have been integrated into art forms such as literature, music, visual art, and film. Further, this course interrogates how, on the one hand, discerning such appropriation might shape one’s experience of an artefact, and, on the other hand, how this appropriation might refract one’s understanding of certain biblical and para-biblical material.
