A typical project that lasts for six weeks will involve students being present within the laboratory and undertaking research work from approximately 09:00 – 17:00, Monday – Friday. Projects are designed so that research objectives can be achieved within this timescale. On occasion, some types of experiment may have slightly different timescales, but the timing of the student’s workday will be adjusted to reflect this. Arcadia students will be supervised at all times by a faculty member, postdoctoral researcher, or member of technical staff.
Every Wednesday afternoon, Arcadia students will gather together for small group tuition with faculty members. These Wednesday workshops will cover a range of scientific research skills that should complement the students’ project work. Some will involve practical work within the teaching laboratories to reinforce the concepts being covered in the workshop curricula (e.g. serial dilutions in the laboratory, human data capture and analysis etc).
A range of examples from different disciplines within medical sciences will be used during the workshops to cater for the differing interests of the Arcadia students. These workshops will also allow faculty to speak to Arcadia students one-on-one, to discuss their progress and to ensure they have regular pastoral support during their stay in Aberdeen.
Information on contact teaching time is available from the course guide.
