MC4014: HONOURS MICROBIOLOGY-OPTION 1 (2020-2021)

Last modified: 05 Aug 2021 13:04

Course Overview

  • A course detailing how gut environmental factors, including anaerobiosis and pH, impact on the composition of the human colonic microbiota and virome
  • A course in which lecture material is supported by bioinformatics workshops using various online software packages which are primarily DNA sequence-based to study and profile complex microbial communities.
  • Contains a research literature based tutorial in which you are provided with research papers and prepare an essay.
  • Incorporates lectures detailing different mechanisms underlying the regulation of bacterial gene expression including different strategies for bacterial gene regulation and bacterial strategies that contributes to the spread of antibiotic resistance genes between bacteria.

Course Description

Course Aims: The aim of this course - Microbiology Option 1 - is to provide insight into microbial genomics and genetics of mainly human gut bacteria, led by a study of the primary literature in this field. Main Learning Outcomes: In Microbiology Option 1 - students will gain knowledge and achieve an understanding into microbial genomics, physiology and ecology. They will learn how to different aspects of the biology of microorganisms impact on human health and disease, as well as the molecular mechanisms underpinning their survival. Content: Human gut microbiology and virology; mechanism of gene regulation in bacteria; evolution and spread of antibiotic resistance mechanisms in bacteria. Additional insight into aspects of human gut Microbiology will be achived by independently researching and writing a literature review essay.
