This course is the start of the systems based teaching in the medicine curriculum and incorporates the form and function of the human respiratory and cardiovascular systems in both health and disease and the biomedical principles which underlie them. Diagnosis and management of common respiratory and cardiovascular disease are studied. This course is only available to students in year 1 of the MBChB programme/ year 1 of the B Clin Med Sci programme.

This course is taught in the second half session of year 1 of the MBChB programme. It is designed to provide a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. This begins with the principles of normal form and function of these systems followed by the clinical presentations and pathology of diseases of the systems, how diseases are investigated and diagnosed. Treatment and management strategies for the common respiratory and cardiovascular diseases are explored. The course also explores the different concepts of health and how the environment, as well as political and economic factors can influence it. The role of a GP and the Primary Health Care Team are also explored, in general, and in relation to the management of patients with respiratory and cardiovascular disease. How to conduct a consultation in a community setting, and how to deal with uncertainty and manage clinical risk, will also be introduced. Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars, some directed self-learning of clinical cases and specific packages. There are also some small group tutorials and “GP live” sessions.
Information on contact teaching time is available from the course guide.
