Course Description

From the twentieth century onwards, there has been a rise of discourse associated with gender and sexuality. Such issues are bound historically with religious self-descriptions of anthropology across time. Simultaneously, religions have had to reflect upon changed cultural critiques of identity politics, including questions of gender and sexuality. This course will explore queer and feminist critical theory, gender history and sexual ethics as they are related to religion and philosophy. Questions which the course asks include: Is God a woman? How many genders are there? Is religion innately misogynist? How has feminist or queer theory been integrated into religious traditions? What theological accounts of anthropology are there? How does religion shape identity? What do we learn from female mystics? How have the traditions of Christianity dealt with gender, sexuality and queer identities?
