In this course students develop an understanding of the shallow-water and coastal marine biodiversity of the Mediterranean, with implications for applications (e.g. fisheries, conservation, marine carbon sequestration). The course comprises one full week of residential activity (5-6 days), with a weekend in between or afterwards for self-arranged excursions / activities. The venue is the INALE Fisheries Research Institute in Nea Peramos near Kavala on the northern Greek mainland. Inshore habitats include sandy and rocky benthos / shores, cliffs, seagrasss meadows, Cystoseira climax communities, sea caves, salt marshes, coastal lagoons and a large estuary (the Nestos Delta).
Students will gain practical skills in qualitative and quantitative surveys, in identifying marine and estuarine plants / algae and invertebrates, as well as field ecology. There is also an emphasis on fisheries biology with on-site visits of fishing vessels and fish markets.
The course involves several days of snorkeling-based activities. Even though participation in snorkeling is not mandatory, students will benefit much more from the course if they do participate.

The above cost does not include travel, but it does include accommodation and breakfast. Students are required to book their own flights to attend the course, but must not do so until their place has been confirmed on the course. Accommodation will be organized by the course coordinators. Likewise, taverns in Nea Peramos and Kavala offer excellent value for money, at much lower cost than in the UK and, indeed, most of Europe. | 550.0000 |
