Course Overview

This course studies Latin America as a vibrant area of scientific and medical knowledge production within global history. The course focuses on the creation of scientific and medical knowledge, including through interaction between European and indigenous traditions, as a process contributing to the social and cultural history of a region long imagined by explorers, bureaucrats and settlers as a marvelous place of scientific discovery lush with natural resources of benefit to humanity.

Course Description

This course studies Latin America as a vibrant area of scientific and medical knowledge production within global history. The course focuses on the creation of scientific and medical knowledge, including through interaction between European and indigenous traditions, as a process contributing to the social and cultural history of a region long imagined by explorers, bureaucrats and settlers as a marvelous place of scientific discovery lush with natural resources of benefit to humanity. This course uses a variety of teaching materials, including primary and secondary sources, as well as visual and audio materials.
