Course Overview

Chemical Engineering Design takes the learning from the first two and a half years of the degree and ties it together whilst formally introducing student to the overall process of chemical engineering design.

Employability and professional attributes are embedded in the course with design engineers (students) being line managed.  Professional attributes such as time management, project management, communication and team working are developed through the course. Within the course, design engineers will also significantly develop

Course Description

The course aims to contribute to the development of an integrated approach to Chemical Engineering by bringing together the aspects of core chemical engineering and underpinning mathematics and science which have been (are being) studied to date in the context of a series of chemical engineering tasks.

In this wider context the course aims to:

  • Allow students to develop & demonstrate criticality and creativity by analyzing systems to make design choices whilst facing the challenges of uncertainty presented by incomplete/ambiguous data & information;
  • Allow students to develop competence in process simulation using industry-standard software applications;
  • Allow students to develop communication & team working skills including the presentation of professional design calculations;
  • Allow students to apply their knowledge and problem solving skills to real problems;
  • Allow students to develop skills associated with Chemical Engineering Practice such as: the ability to find, use and apply information from the technical literature; the ability to find and apply appropriate codes of practice and industry standards.
