EA3519: DESIGN OF STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS (2019-2020)

Last modified: 25 Sep 2019 09:58

Course Overview

This course is an introduction to Structural Design using steel, concrete and composite steel/concrete.

The emphasis is on the design of individual components – the ‘Structural Elements’ – these being members in tension, compression, bending – in either steel or reinforced concrete – and in the bolted and welded connections between steel members.

There is an extensive laboratory exercise testing reinforced and un-reinforced concrete to destruction.

It should be noted that students are also required to do the separate course EA3720, half of which consists of a 9 week Steel Design exercise.

Course Description

The syllabus consists of the following topics, but need not be delivered in the following order.

1.      Design of structural steelwork to Eurocode 3: beams (flexure, shear, lateral, torsional and local buckling); axially loaded columns, beam columns.

2.      Design of welded and bolted connections.

3.      Design of composite (steel and concrete) beams and slabs to Eurocode 4.

4.      Structural Concrete: Testing of hardened and fresh concrete, Mix Design. Design loads and design strength of materials. Limit state design of reinforced concrete elements to Eurocode 2. Flexural analysis of singly and doubly reinforced beams. Shear, bond, anchorage, curtailment, deflection and crack control. Reinforced concrete columns, axially loaded and eccentrically loaded short columns. Short and slender elements.

Associated with this course is an extensive laboratory exercise where concrete cubes and cylinders, and a reinforced concrete beam, are tested to destruction.  In the latter case the gradual process of beam failure is carefully monitored and logged and the results compared with design theory.

Students are required to purchase the Eurocode student extracts, Concise Eurocode 3 (P362) and Steel Section Tables (P363) and the Course Tutor will advise on the arrangements for these.  Students will b erequired to bring these documents to the final examination, which is, in any case, Open-Book.  The same documents are also required to be used in the level 4 course (EG40JG), which follows on from this one.
