Course Overview

Topics covered in this course span medical science through the ages; from ancient civilizations to the modern day science of genomics and synthetic biology.
Alongside lecture material, in depth practical classes will cover biomedical measurement techniques, forensic science and a research-based mini project.
Overall, this course is a journey through some of the key milestones that underpin the discipline of medical science we see today.

Course Description

This course will introduce core disciplines associated with the School of Medical Sciences. Through exploration of basic human body function in health and disease, the course will engage students with the fundamental concepts of anatomy, physiology and neuroscience. This will lay the foundation for understanding the general principles of pharmacology, developmental biology and the biomolecular sciences. Discipline specific skills and techniques will be utilised to enhance understanding and to develop broader medical science skills and methods.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: Change marking of 3 lab reports to online tests. Students will complete a paper copy of the lab manual as normal, but students would keep the lab manual and use it to answer questions in a MyAberdeen online assessment. This assessment would be automatically graded with feedback without the need for paper copies of the lab manuals needing to be collated, distributed to markers, collected from markers, grades manually entered into MyAberdeen grade centre, and finally scripts being collected by students.

Resit: 1 two-hour MCQ exam (70%) and previous continuous assessment (30%).
