This course will explore the explosion of new musical ideas at the turn of the twentieth century including Debussy’s discoveries in the real of harmony, timbre and time; the developments of Schoenberg, Berg and Webern in the realm of pitch; the rhythmic and formal innovations of Stravinsky and Bartòk as well as Varèse’s fascination with sound.

This ten week course will explore the first wave of musical modernity, the fin-de-siècle period of Debussy, Stravinsky, Bartòk, Schoenberg, Berg, Webern and Varèse. Students will be introduced to the key innovations of each composer in the realms of pitch, rhythm, form and timbre. Key musical works will be explored and musical developments will be related to literature, the visual arts and the world of ideas. The composers and works studied on the course will vary from year to year.
