GH1007: GAELIC FOR BEGINNERS 1A (2018-2019)

Course Overview

This is an 11-week course in the modern Scottish Gaelic language for students who have little or no prior experience of the language, or for students with no formal qualifications in Gaelic.

You will learn Gaelic through a mixture of interactive language classes, a class which focuses on conversational skills, and a programme of homework exercises, together with self-directed learning.

By the end of the course, you will be able to speak, read, write and understand Gaelic at a basic level and you will have mastered a large working vocabulary.

Course Description

The course will develop a basic understanding of the Gaelic language through focusing on all four linguistic skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening comprehension. Students attend 3 grammar/reading and writing classes per week and attend a further tutorial focusing on oral and aural Gaelic skills (4 hours of class tuition in total). Students are also requested to pursue private study and to submit regular written work.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 1 two-hour examination (60%); Continuous written assessment (20%); Continuous oral/aural assessment (20%).

3 formative assessments on different aspects of written Gaelic language, including 2 homework exercises and 1 in-class test, will be used to give feedback to students during the course. These 3 pieces of work will form the basis of the 20% written continuous assessment. The oral/aural assessment (20%) will be based on performance in all classes and completion of certain assignments throughout the course.

Resit: 1 two-hour examination (100%).

Formative Assessment

3 formative assessments on different aspect of written Gaelic language, including 2 homework exercises and 1 in-class test. The three pieces of work will form the basis of the 20% continuous assessment.

The oral assessment (20%) will be based on performance in all classes and completion of certain assignments throughout the course.

Feedback

The above assessments are given CGS marks and written feedback. General verbal feedback is given in class. Additional written and/or verbal feedback is given on an individual basis as required.
