Course Overview

Course Description

In this course students develop an understanding of the shallow-water and coastal marine biodiversity of the Mediterranean, with implications for applications (e.g. fisheries, conservation, marine carbon sequestration). The course comprises one full week of residential activity (5-6 days), with a weekend in between or afterwards for self-arranged excursions / activities. The venue is the Marine Science Dept. of the University of the Aegean, Mytilini, Lesvos, which offers all amenities of a university campus in a historic Mediterranean island capital – including a canteen offering typical Greek food at low cost. Inshore habitats include sandy and rocky benthos / shores, cliffs, seagrasss meadows, Cystoseira climax communities, sea caves, salt marshes, coastal lagoons are accessible.

Students will gain practical skills in qualitative and quantitative surveys, in identifying marine plants / algae and invertebrates, as well as field ecology. There is also an emphasis on fisheries biology with on-site visits of fishing vessels and fish markets.

The above cost does not include travel. Students are required to book their own flights to attend the course, but must not do so until their place has been confirmed on the course.

Costs: £150. Deposit (inc): £50.

 

Deposits are normally non-refundable. The cases where deposits are likely to be refunded are as

follows:

1) where there is good cause for student withdrawing from a field course, good cause is

determined by DoT or nominated person;

2) where the withdrawal has not resulted in a gap because a different student has enrolled

to take that place; and,

3) when the student withdraws from the course in good time and before the end of the

first semester.

Full payments are also normally non-refundable. The cases where full refunds may be made are

similar to points 1 and 2 above.
