Residential field course designed to provide you with training in ship-based applied marine biology and analysis of collected data. Trips to fish/shellfish farms and to see local seabirds are highlighted extras.
Group based project work provides skills in team working, data analysis and presentation.
Hard work throughout the days is rewarded through the development of deeper understanding and the enjoyment of spending time with peers and staff in a wonderful environment.

Includes training in sampling Phytoplankton, Micro and Meso-Zooplankton, Benthos and commercial fish species at sea. Temperature and Conductivity depth profiles will also be taken at sea. Identification to the lowest taxonomic level for each group is also taught along with the analytic methods for assessing population density and an appreciation of internal and external morphology of fish pertaining to commercial fisheries. All work is carried out in teams apart from a specific fisheries project. The course culminates with student teams analysing and presenting elements of the collated data thereby gaining an overview of the sampling results.
Students are required to purchase their evening meals or eat fish with cooking demonstrations provided..

Please note that places are limited and, due to health and safety regulations, the School reserves the right to move students onto another field course when capacity is reached.
Dates are Sun 2nd June - Sun 9th June 2019.
Costs: £200. Deposit (inc): £50.
Deposits are normally non-refundable. The cases where deposits are likely to be refunded are as
follows:
1) where there is good cause for student withdrawing from a field course, good cause is
determined by DoT or nominated person;
2) where the withdrawal has not resulted in a gap because a different student has enrolled
to take that place; and,
3) when the student withdraws from the course in good time and before the end of the
first semester.
Full payments are also normally non-refundable. The cases where full refunds may be made are
similar to points 1 and 2 above.

There are no assessments for this course.
