Course Overview

The course will help you consolidate and develop skills in experimental design, sampling, analysis, presentation, and interpretation of data. You will be encouraged to seek to improve your academic writing and develop other transferable skills.

Each week, there is one 1-hour introductory lecture.  In two 2-hour sessions when will work through a series of computer-based data tasks, using relevant and realistic biological and environmental themes.

Teaching is informal and friendly. During sessions, staff will chat to you about your progress and provide help where necessary.

Assessments are two online multiple-choice tests (each 25%) and an individual project (50%).

Course Description

The course will focus on a series of essential skills, associated with becoming an effective and successful biologist or environmental scientist. These enhanced skills include hypothesis formulation, experimental design, data distributions and probability, data handling descriptive and inferential statistics, and interpreting data in terms of biological or environmental science. The emphasis throughout will be on: Consolidating existing skills; developing new skills and preparing the way for Level 3 courses in SBS.





Further Information & Notes

The course is only open to students with a degree intention in a programme coordinated by SBS. Not available to other students - except visiting exchange students with a relevant degree intention from home university.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: Continuous assessment, consisting of two online tests (each 25% of the overall course mark) and an individual project (50%).

Resit: Submission of any outstanding or failed pieces of coursework and/or re-take of online test(s).

Formative Assessment

Formative on-line tests will help students assess how well they are learning. Student participation in these tests will be monitored. Participation and performance with tasks will alert the course coordinators to any difficulties with individual students in attainment and/or attendance. An optional ‘data clinic’ will be available at the end of each week, to help students who want additional help with coursework.

Feedback

Formative assessments students will be given automated feedback on tests in MyAberdeen.
Students will be given individual verbal feedback on their work during classes.
For online tests, generic feedback will be given to the class, and students will be given individual feedback on request. Written feedback will be provided on individual projects.
