Last modified: 22 May 2019 17:07

Course Overview

Throughout the honours programme, you will be encouraged to reflect on your developing skills and knowledge as an art historian.  Through tutor-led and self-directed visits to various locations, the Fieldwork course will foster a wide appreciation of past and current issues in the art world, beyond the classroom.  The course will include not only a study of art and architecture but also a consideration of their context, display, function and interpretation.

Course Description

Fieldwork 1 is based on the study of works of art and architecture in situ. Core elements of the course include a residential reading party, tutor-led class visits to Edinburgh and Dundee, and an independent visit to Glasgow. Students are also expected independently to explore art galleries, museums and architecture, and to attend at least one public lecture. Throughout Level 3, they record and reflect on their experiences in their online Flog (Fieldwork Log), comment on their fellow students' Flog entries and reflect on those received from other students and staff. Fieldtrip participation and regular contributions to the Flog determine progression into the Level 4 Fieldwork 2 course.
