PX3513: PHYSICS OF WAVES (2017-2018)

Last modified: 27 Feb 2018 15:51

Course Overview

Mathematical modelling and analysis of geophysical wave phenomena play a crucial role in the technology underpinning many of the most important industries in the UK and the world, including the oil and mining industries. This course This course presents the main concepts of the physics of waves, and applies these fundamental concepts to important geophysics systems, including seismic waves, the analysis and interpretation of seismic measurements, and noise interferometry in geophysics.

Course Description

This course presents the main concepts of the physics of waves, including normal modes, transversal and longitudinal waves, reflection, diffraction, refraction and interference. The Fourier transform and the Green function methods are introduced, and their use in the analysis of wave phenomena is explored. These fundamental concepts are then applied to important geophysics systems, including seismic waves, the analysis and interpretation of seismic measurements, and noise interferometry in geophysics.
