MU4011: COMPOSING WITH SOUND (2017-2018)

Course Overview

Students will be expected to listen to, analyse and critique a prescribed list of electroacoustic compositions as well as demonstrating how this informs their own practice in one to one composition tutorials. Bi-weekly composition seminars will allow students to discuss their own work within the context of that of pioneers and established composers in a variety of genres drawn from electroacoustic music and sound art.

Course Description

Students will be expected to listen to, analyse and critique a prescribed list of electroacoustic compositions as well as demonstrating how this informs their own practice in one to one composition tutorials. Bi-weekly composition seminars will allow students to discuss their own work within the context of that of pioneers and established composers in a variety of genres drawn from electroacoustic music and sound art.

By the end of the course, students will:

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of different approaches to different compositional methodologies involving composing with sound;
  • display a knowledge and understanding of the musical, structural and technical aspects of the compositional process;
  • communicate a knowledge and understanding of the techniques and aesthetic processes involved in creating electroacoustic music and sound art;
  • demonstrate ability to take on board advice and suggestions from peer group composers through discussion and sharing of work and to deliver astute and appropriate criticism of the work of others.

  • Analysis of a selected electroacoustic composition (35%)
  • Composition (65%)
Resit

  • Resubmission of final composition if failure is there, or new composition if failure is in Analysis component/in both.
