Course Aims: The aim of this course - Microbiology Option 1 - is to provide insight into microbial genomics and genetics of microbial pathogens and other microorganisms, led by a study of the primary literature in this field. Main Learning Outcomes: In Microbiology Option 1 -, students will gain knowledge and achieve an understanding into microbial physiology and genomics. They will learn how to different aspects of the biology of microorganisms impact on human health and microbial survival, as well as the molecular mechanisms underpinning evolution of pathogenic character. Content: Microbial physiology and genomics; microbial pathogenicity factors; mechanisms of genome evolution. Additional insight into fundamental aspects of Microbiology will be achieved by independently researching and writing a literature review essay.

1st Attempt: 1 two-hour written paper (70%), in-course assessment consisting of one written research feature (2000 words) (30%). Resit: 1 three-hour written paper (75%), plus previous in-course assessment essay (2000 words) (25%).
