Course Overview

This course discusses the issues involved in reconstructing the history and religions of ancient Israel and Judah. It provides an overview of the history and religions of Ancient Israel and Judah, as portrayed in the Hebrew Bible, as illustrated by archaeological findings, and as understood within their larger Ancient Near Eastern context. It further teaches the students how to evaluate critically these portrayals and, as a result, how to reach independent and informed interpretations of the Biblical text.  Download Course Guide

Course Description

This course discusses the issues involved in reconstructing the history and religions of ancient Israel and Judah. It provides an overview of the history and religions of Ancient Israel and Judah, as portrayed in the Hebrew Bible, as illustrated by archaeological findings, and as understood within their larger Ancient Near Eastern context. Summative Assessments

1st attempt:

1 Two-hour, Web-based, Timed, Open Book, Final Exam, using MyAberdeen quiz-tool: (50%)
1 Essay (2000-3000 words): (25%)
1 Web-based Quiz on MyAberdeen: (25%)

 

Resit:

two-hour online examination (100%)

Formative Assessment

The material covered in the tutorial will serve as a deepening of select material covered in the lectures. It will provide a forum for the exchange of intellectual ideas related to specific key ideas in the Hebrew Bible. It will provide the students with the opportunity to voice their own evaluation of read and taught material and it will enhance their skills of independent reasoning.

Feedback

The discussions during the tutorials will be a place for the students to receive oral feedback both from the course-coordinator and from their fellow students.
