Course Overview

Lectures and practicals provide a framework for thinking about the marine environment in an integrated way.

A variety of data are used in practical sessions (e.g., oceanographic records, zooplankton and fish samples, video footage from the deep ocean) to support your data recording and analysis skills.

Guidance on writing an essay and feedback on your essay improves your understanding of what is expected in scientific writing and of your own strengths and weaknesses.

Case studies focused on the effects of human activities on marine systems support the development of your capacity for critical thought.

Course Description

The course covers main aspects of ocean circulation; regional upwelling; chemical and physical properties of seawater; the ecology of phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos, nekton, mammals, birds, rocky shores, littoral zone, kelp forest and deep sea; the coral reef, polar and North Sea ecosystems; and selected topics in marine management.

This course extends over five weeks only; the course is available only to students in Programme Year 3.

This course runs in weeks 13-17, and is scheduled in Thread 1, so may have contact hours in any or all of these times:  Mondays, 9-13; Thursday, all day; Friday, 9-13.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 1 three-hour written examination (60%), assessment of laboratory work (40%).

Resit: Similar to 1st attempt, with continuous assessment mark(s) and /or exam mark carried forward with an opportunity to resit either or both, depending on what was failed in the first attempt.

Formative Assessment

A strong emphasis will be made throughout the course on informal verbal feedback during practical sessions.

Feedback

Each student will receive individual feedback and a mark for each task. Feedback will be provided as written comments.
