Course Overview

This course allows you to explore theory and practice relevant to learning and teaching. It addresses the planning, implementation, assessment and evaluation of learning and encourages you to engage with a variety of perspectives to inform your own professional development.  It draws on a cyclical process of reflection on practice, in practice and for action, and encourages you to draw on reflective dialogue, peer review and learner feedback to enhance your practice. The supported use of a range of technologies throughout the course will also enhance your digital practice.

Course Description

The Developing Professional Practice course will encourage you to work collaboratively with your peers to

  • support you in enhancing your professional practice in your context
  • undertake a cyclical process of reflection on practice, in practice, and for action

  • critically reflect, drawing from a variety of sources of evidence and feedback, including qualitative and quantitative data, policies and legislation, to inform the decision making processes involved

  • make informed choices about your practice develop as a digital practitioner

 

Further Information & Notes

Participants must be teaching in a relevant context to undertake this course. 

This course is a compulsory course for the award of the Teaching Qualification in Further Education (TQFE).  If the level of study for the TQFE is at degree level (SCQF level 9) then select course code ED3095.  If the level of study is for the Postgraduate Certificate TQFE - Masters level (SCQF 11) -  then select  course code ED50JF.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: Continuous Assessment by means of a digital professional portfolio with the inclusion of: 1. Evidence of addressing a professional challenge (25%): a. Plan, implement and evaluate a lesson designed to address a personal challenge, which will be peer observed; b. Peer-observe a colleague's teaching and offer constructive feedback, c. Provide a reflective commentary (of no more than 1,500 words) of addressing the professional challenge, including personal learning

2. Evidence of addressing the professional standards for Scotland's Lecturers for assessment and engagement with quality standards (25%)
a. Short reflective written commentary on using assessment to improve learning and engaging with quality assurance (1,500 words)
3. Evidence of Professional Practice (25%)
a. Higher education tutor report
b. Co-tutor / college report
c. Teaching experience agreement
4. Evidence of identifying professional development needs (25%)
a. Short reflective commentary (1,500 words) identifying strengths and development in relation to the initial professional standards and moving beyond the initial standards.
A (minimum) pass is required in each of the four sections for the course to be awarded an overall (minimum) pass.
Resit: One further resit of any one of the sections that are not deemed satisfactory

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment is built in to the course through for example the responses given to the online activity and in feedback to the collaborative tasks within the course.

Feedback

Oral feedback will be provided through tutorials and small group discussions. Formal written feedback on the assessed account will be provided on a feedback form and participants will be given the opportunity to discuss this feedback with tutors. Feedback on professional practice is provided orally immediately after lesson observation with written feedback provided, normally, within a week of the observed lesson.
