Undergraduate Counselling Skills 2016-2017

CO1001: COUNSELLING SKILLS 1

15 credits

Level 1

First Term

Counselling Skills 1 is a practical experiential course which will enable students to develop self-awareness and advanced communication skills. It is the first of four courses which make up the Counselling Skills Certificate (COSCA validated), the first step to becoming a Counsellor or Psychotherapist.

Students must complete a diagnostic test prior to being able to Register on this course.

CO1018: COUNSELLING SKILLS 1 (1 YEAR VARIANT)

15 credits

Level 1

First Term

Second Term

The theme of this module is 'Exploration and Expansion'.  Students will continue to develop the practical skills introduced in Counselling Skills 1. They will gain insight into the structure of a counselling relationship within professional ethics and boundaries and explore self-awareness and self-in-context in relation to transitions, attachment, loss and readjustment, attitudes to differences, values, prejudice, social identity and the ethics of justice.

CO1518: COUNSELLING SKILLS 2 (1 YEAR VARIANT)

15 credits

Level 1

Second Term

CODIAG: COUNSELLING DIAGNOSTIC TEST

Level 1

First Term

Students being admitted to a Counselling programme or course, should first take the Counselling Diagnostic Test. The test can be taken at any time and is completed online. You will be unable to register for Counselling Skills 1, and consequently any of the subsequent courses until you have read and accepted the Terms and Conditions in the Diagnostic Test.

Having completed the test you should select the appropriate course when making your curriculum choices.

 

CO2001: COUNSELLING SKILLS: AN INTRODUCTION TO TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS

15 credits

Level 2

First Term

Transactional Analysis (TA) builds on previous counselling skills training and practical experience to enhance understanding of human personality, relationships and communication.  It will offer participants the opportunity to become more familiar with ideas and concepts that form the basis of an approach which is readily applicable to many different settings and which may provide a useful complement to existing listening skills.

CO2002: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PSYCHODYNAMIC APPROACH TO COUNSELLING

15 credits

Level 2

First Term

Students will have the opportunity to integrate the use of psychodynamic skills with an understanding of theory, the process of practice and individual growth and personal development.

CO2003: A PERSON CENTRED APPROACH TO HELPING RELATIONSHIPS

15 credits

Level 2

First Term

This course provides students the opportunity to develop and apply person-centred counselling and interpersonal skills to non-counselling settings; it can also be a step towards Diploma training and a career in counselling.  The course seeks to enhance participants’ personal and professional interaction with others and their own reflective practice. This is an opportunity for people from a wide range of backgrounds to learn experientially  together in a group setting. 

Participants will be able to explore the connection of self-awareness and self-acceptance to practice in the process of the person-centred approach.

CO2004: FURTHER STEPS IN COUNSELLING 1

15 credits

Level 2

First Term

This course follows on from Counselling Skills 1-4 and provide students an opportunity to further develop their skills. Students will reconnect with their previous learning and experience, and update their practice and understanding of counselling skills. The core learning in this course comes from participants working with their own life experiences and skills applications.

CO2005: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF MINDFULNESS

15 credits

Level 2

First Term

Students are introduced to the theories of mindfulness and how it can be used in different contexts, for examples stress and self-compassion. There are opportunities to Small group work gives students an opportunity to discuss and monitor their own learning

CO2006: AN INTRODUCTION TO COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL COUNSELLING

15 credits

Level 2

First Term

Cognitive behavioural counselling is the ability to identify the thoughts arising from a client's interpretation of life experiences which lead to changes in mood and behaviour.  Students will learn skills to work with a client, facilitate and develop strategies to find a more adaptive thinking or behaviour. 

This course assumes previous practical experience as a professional helper or Counsellor, or completion of Counselling Skills 1 and 2.

CO2007: COUNSELLING SKILLS 3

First Term

Counselling Skills 3 provides students the opportunity to develop their ability as reflective practitioners.  It is a practical experiential course which builds on the experience gained in Counselling Skills 1 and 2.  Students will analyse and comment on their own practice with reference to theory and evidence of the core conditions.

This training, although experiential, is focused solely on the personal and professional development of participants as a counselling supervisor.
