Manuscript studies are based on close and detailed observation. Focusing on only two major artistic products of the 12th century, students will become familiar with the particular skills required for working with such original sources. Manuscripts contain many levels of information from the physical codicology and paleography to the text, illumination, patrons and readers. These choice examples demonstrate humour and drama, in addition to the basically theological texts. Although written in Latin, all the texts are translated into English and are universally available on the web.

Both the St Albans Psalter and Aberdeen Bestiary are lavishly illustrated Romanesque manuscripts. All the pictures tell a story about the place and time in which they were created. Around the psalter is a passionate love story about Christina of Markyate, dramatically told in contemporary texts and perhaps intimated by some of the illustrations. The bestiary is a text book intended to captivate its readers through beguiling tales while teaching them moral lessons. Both books reveal a great deal of their past through a close study of codicology, and both (in facsimile and original) are available in the library.
