Course Description

This course offers an opportunity to study a theme in modern Hispanic culture. In 2015, this course will address: What does it mean to be indigenous in Latin America? What does it mean to be indigenous in Latin America? The voices of indigenous groups have reached a global audience not only as a result of political activism but also through their cultural production over the past thirty years. The effects of colonialism, neo-colonialism and globalisation are articulated through a variety of forms that testify to the dynamism and heterogeneity of indigenous culture. As well as analysing “traditional” literary texts in this course, students will access new media to engage with contemporary indigenous hip-hop, art and film. Some of the themes that recur in these texts are related to identity, territory, language, ecological destruction and cultural survival. It will be taught by Dr Sandra Collins.
