Through lectures, student-led seminars and presentations by external experts, this course enables students to engage at an advanced level with social, economic and policy issues and changes associated with contemporary countryside and agri-food geographies at local, regional, national and international scales. Course topics include: rural socio-economic restructuring; accessibility and service provision; a conceptually-informed exploration of changing agri-food networks; the Common Agricultural Policy; the move towards a multi-functional countryside; and rural futures scenarios.

Indicative course content: conceptualising 'rural'; the diverse rural economy; food regimes theory; agriculture and the post-productivist transition; the Common Agricultural Policy; alternative food networks; the consumption countryside; the changing demography of rural communities (including depopulation and repopulation, experiences of rural life for different demographic sub-groups); rural challenges (e.g. service provision, housing, accessibility); rural opportunities (e.g. the digital society, entrepreneurialism); the multi-functional countryside; comparative perspectives on key challenges facing rural communities.

1st Attempt: Coursework (33%) one 2,500 word essay; 1 two-hour examination (67%). Resit: A resit for this course is not normally available until the following academic year.
Students will receive formative feedback after those seminar sessions for which they are required to prepare 750-1000 word reports.
