GN3502: GENETICS

Second Term

  • this is a comprehensive course, providing an essential foundation for all advanced studies in Genetics and Molecular Biology; 
  • the principles of molecular genetics and population genetics will be covered, with an emphasis on their application to the understanding of human biology. The teaching material will integrate information arising from the recent explosion of genome sequence data, equipping students with the necessary skills to engage with this rapidly developing field; 
  • a wide range of transferable skills are embedded within the course, including problem-solving, critical analysis of research material, oral and written presentation and subject-specific laboratory and computational skills

GN4010: HONOURS GENETICS - OPTION 1

15 credits

Level 4

First Term

  • this advanced course explores the genetic basis of what it is to be human; 
  • the course offers a comprehensive view of the human genome and how it has been shaped by human history and prehistory, using information from genetics, medicine and archaeology; 
  • the interplay between genetics and culture will be examined, showing how these factors are important for understanding the variation in human health and disease; 
  • the course explores the recent findings arising from analyses of human genome data, both individual and population-wide, and provides training in the tools used in these analyses

GN4310: HONOURS GENETICS - OPTION 2

15 credits

Level 4

First Term

  • the sequencing of the human genome, genome wide association studies (GWAS) and next generation sequencing have permitted an understanding of genetic variation and epigenetics in health and disease that would have been inconceivable 10 years ago; 
  • this course will encourage student access to the latest advances in human molecular genetics and will highlight the availability of genomic information currently available and how this information was derived; 
  • the course will permit a balanced understanding of the role of human genetic and epigenetic variation in the maintenance of health and disease and will examine the future of personalised medicine.

GN4501: GENETICS (IMMUNOLOGY) HONOURS RESEARCH PROJECT

60 credits

Level 4

Second Term

This 10 week research project will give the student experience in advanced laboratory or literature research techniques.
Wider transferrable skills which will enhance employability are
  • time-management skills;
  • the ability to design and plan research strategy;
  • the ability to critically assess the work of others;
  • skills in data analysis and interpretation;
  • the ability to maintain accurate, detailed, up-to-date records of work;
  • the ability to write a clear account of the aims of the work, what was achieved and its significance;
  • the ability to present the major findings of the project orally to a general audience

GN4502: GENETICS HONOURS RESEARCH PROJECT

60 credits
