Course Overview

Two and a half weeks of field work in the forest followed by five weeks of writing up allows you to explore the function of a forest from stand to landscape level.

A variety of field measurements will be made and use of spreadsheets will improve your confidence in data handling and analysis.

The main assignment in the form of a forest management plan allows you to demonstrate your skills aimed at a professional standard.

The mixture of science and management offers you a unique range of skills required by employers

Course Description

Forest management plans define the objectives of management for a forest or part of a forest, and set out a programme of activities for a fixed period of time, usually five years. The course is in two parts.

Fieldwork
Collecting data on soils, vegetation, tree species, stand growth and forest health.

Preparation of the management plan
Setting long and short term management objectives, preparing a description of the forest, analysing past management practices, developing a planning structure and setting out management prescriptions to be adopted, preparing prescriptions for environment and protection and setting out a financial forecast for the plan period.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 100% coursework (a management plan). Resit: Resubmission of coursework (a management plan) 100%.

Formative Assessment

A strong emphasis will be made throughout the course on informal verbal feedback during discussion and tutorial sessions.

Feedback

There is a two hour long feedback session when the students can see their plans complete with comments by the first marker. These are discussed both within the class setting and at the individual level if requested.
