Course Overview

This student-led reading course will allow learners to dive in-depth into an advanced area of computer science, such as game theory, machine learning, decision theory, social choice or algorithms for automated planning. The exact format of the course will differ based on the exact topic chosen, but will typically consist of informal group seminars together with continuous assessments. This course is ideal for those who want to gain exposure to cutting edge computer science research, and there is an expectation that students will have some understanding of mathematical concepts and be willing to undertake self-directed learning.

Course Description

Course Aims

This course seeks to provide students with a deeper insight into specific areas of computing science.

Main Learning Outcomes

Understanding of the cutting edge techniques and open questions in an area of computing science
Ability to read, understand and participate in academic discussion

Course Content

The course will, in agreement with the students, select a research area within computing science for deeper study. Students will then be expected to perform self-directed learning, with the help of the course coordinator, to learn about the area in more detail.

Topics could include:
  • Game theory
  • Modal logic
  • Decision theory
  • Robotics
  • Logistics/Operations Research
  • Argumentation
  • Machine vision

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt

100%  continuous assessment, which will typically consist of essays. presentations, solved exercises and class participation.

Resit

Resubmission of the continuous assessment where applicable, or another means of assessment such as an oral examination.

Formative Assessment

Tutorials will take the form of discussion sessions, in which students may be expected to present some work.

Feedback

Feedback will be provided during tutorial sessions.
